Why do some people succeed, while others fall short?
What is it that high-achievers do, which others do not?
In his famous book “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill outlined the ultimate blueprint to success.
A common critique is that Hill himself wasn’t a shining example of what he talks about in his book.
This may be true, but the fact remains:
He managed to present the main ingredients of success in a way that nobody had done before him.
In this post, I’ve created a summary of the 13 main principles of “Think and Grow Rich”.
Do YOU have an ambitious goal for your online business?
If so, applying these principles on a consistent basis will greatly increase your chances of reaching it.
In order to be successful, you must first have a burning desire to achieve it.
This may seem obvious when spelled out like this, but very few people actually think about it.
Desire is what will spring you into action.
It will push you out of your comfort zone, and make you do what’s needed.
Visualize your desire daily, stoke its fire, and get emotionally involved.
This is the starting point of all achievement.
If desire is the seed of all success, faith can be said to be the earth in which it grows.
For your desire to manifest itself in the physical, it needs nutritious soil in which to flourish.
Much like a seed placed in infertile grounds, your desire will never materialize if it’s sown in weak faith.
When you think about your desire and notice negative thoughts starting to appear, make a conscious choice to let them go.
Don’t try to deny their existence (which may lead to emotional repression).
Instead, acknowledge them, but say “No, thanks”, and release them from your mind.
As Bob Proctor says:
Faith and fear both demand you believe in something you cannot see.
3. Auto Suggestion
Our conscious minds can choose what to focus upon, what to accept and what to reject.
This is not the case for what we call the subconscious.
It will take in both the positive and negative – real or imaginative.
For this reason, your culture, education and/or upbringing may instill in your subconscious mind certain beliefs, without you realizing it.
In my case, I discovered I had a very negative view of money.
After plenty of autosuggestion and positive experiences, I no longer struggle with this.
The truth is, we can change our subconscious belief structure (also known as a paradigm).
This is done by repeating affirmations, being around positive people and immersing ourselves in a culture of success and abundance.
4. Specialized Knowledge
In order to be successful in your online ventures, you must learn all you can about whatever it is you do.
Surround yourself with others in your field, whether face to face or over the internet.
Never settle for less than you can do, and develop an attitude of constant improvement.
Reflect, read, watch, listen, imagine, experiment.
The better you are at what you’re doing, the more you or your products will be in demand, and the harder it will be to replace you.
Our desires are formed in our imagination.
From the imagination comes everything we see around us in the physical.
The buildings, roads, clothes, societal systems, great works of art — all originate from this faculty of the mind.
As Napoleon Hill states, our only limitation, within reason (i.e. the natural laws of the universe), lies in the development and use of our imagination and the motivation to act.
Use your imagination to find ways to improve yourself and your work.
6. Organized Planning
Knowledge is only potential power.
It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end.
– Napoleon Hill
To get what you desire, you must first create a practical plan which you can follow.
Note, however, that you don’t have to know all the details at the start of your journey.
You’ll most often find that your plan will be altered over time.
This is because you learn more information on the way, and reach new milestones which boosts your confidence, which may fuel your desire to achieve more.
Personally, I have a long-term plan I read regularly, as well as short-term ones in the form of daily, weekly and monthly to-do lists.
I show you how I organize these lists in this post (tool number 3).
In order to manifest your desire in the physical, you need to pummel procrastination into the ground.
Successful people make decisions quickly, and change them slowly (if at all).
They rarely hesitate, and they act with a sense of urgency, even when there’s no immediate reason to do so.
You must make this a habit.
It may not happen overnight, but repeated autosuggestion will eventually embed it into your subconscious (which controls your habits).
As any successful person will tell you, there are plenty of failures ahead of you.
While we’re on the road toward our desires, all of us will fall from time to time.
However, only a few of us ever manage to pick ourselves back up — again and again and again.
While minimizing your failures is of course optimal, you will not avoid every single instance of disappointment.
In these moments, it’s important to not dwell on your mistakes, but rather look forward.
Learn from your missteps, adapt, improve, and move on.
Dripping water hollows out stone, not through force but through persistence.
9. Power Of The Mastermind
Spending time with a mastermind group is one of the best uses of your non-work hours.
This lets you supercharge your learning and enables collective brainstorming of new ideas.
A mastermind group consists of people with similar goals and/or mindsets to yourself.
In a best-case scenario, most of them should be a bit ahead of you in regards to experience.
These days, you can easily take part in a mastermind online if you want.
Using Facebook groups, dedicated forums or video call software are some common ways to do this.
It’s important to develop a win-win relationship within this group, so that harmony is kept at a maximum.
10. Sexual Transmutation
This is the most controversial idea mentioned by Napoleon Hill, but nonetheless very much real and powerful.
Seasoned students of the Occult will immediately recognize this principle.
Sexual energy is a creative force (after all, it precedes the creation of new life in the physical).
This powerful energy is most often used to attract and couple with a partner we desire.
However, a little-known secret is that it can be harnessed for other uses as well.
Simply put, sexual transmutation is the act of redirecting your sexual energy to a drive other than sex, such as business or art.
I won’t lay out all the details here, but it’s a very interesting subject I suggest you get familiar with.
11. The Subconscious Mind
We’ve already touched on this, but there are a few things to expand upon.
What you feed your subconscious mind through your conscious mind will eventually manifest itself through your beliefs and habits (a.k.a. your paradigm).
Therefore, it’s incredibly important that you quiet your conscious mind and pay attention to what you’re focusing on in your day-to-day life.
You shouldn’t be willfully ignorant of the negative things around you, of course.
However, don’t dwell on them — it won’t do you any favors, that’s for sure.
Instead, feed your mind positive, uplifting things on a continual basis.
If you do that, your chance of success will naturally increase.
12. Understanding The Brain
This principle is all about realizing that you are not your brain — you are using it.
It’s a powerful transmitter and receiver of thought, and should be viewed as such.
Be mindful of what you take in, and what you broadcast outwards.
In the book, Hill repeats himself quite a lot when describing this principle — it could probably have been left out.
Nevertheless, it’s a good thing to emphasize.
13. “The Sixth Sense”
The final principle is the power of the so-called “sixth sense”.
This is the ability to recognize and accept the mysterious forces which emerge on your road to achievement.
You will find that:
- The right opportunities arise suddenly
- Synchronicities take place
- New ideas flow to you without any effort
- You regularly get strong, intuitive hunches
This mysterious power seems to defy current scientific understandings.
Nevertheless, it’s still very much a real, invaluable aid for those who are open to its influence.
Applying The Principles
Even though I discovered them piece by piece from other sources, the 13 principles of success are what got me out of my 9-5 existence.
Today, they continue to carry me forward.
I sincerely hope that they’ll do the same for you.
Keep in mind that you need to consistently apply these 13 principles of success in order to achieve your goals.
You have to make them part of your paradigm.
To do that, you’ll need constant repetition of these ideas.
Repeat them in your mind daily if you can —by reading this summary over and over again, for example.
Do so until they are fully embedded in your subconscious.
Then, it’ll be much easier to consistently apply them in your daily life.
When you do that, you’ll be well on your way to achieving the success you desire.
